You have seen them on television and in movies, usually playing the role of a comic sidekick. Their intelligence and trainability has even catapulted them to star of the film. They are incredible performers, seen live around the world talking, singing, free-flying, and bicycle riding for their trainers. You can see them perched on the shoulders of their Pet Parent playing affectionately in a park near your home. A friend or neighbor may have one, always seeming to work their special pet into the conversation, almost like a parent does with their toddler. You may even have gingerly held a fluffy cockatoo fledgling in your hands at the neighborhood pet store. Meeting the gaze of those quizzical, shining, black eyes, thoughts float into your head like, "just exactly what is my credit card limit?" However you have arrived at this juncture, you find yourself contemplating the idea of becoming a Pet Parent to a bird of your own.

Anyone who has ever been a Pet Parent to a bird will tell you; it is like no other human/pet relationship you will ever experience.

When deciding to add a bird to your family, you will have many things to consider that may be new to you. A bird is a much different kind of "pet" commitment than you may have experienced in your past. Pet parrots, for example, have higher level emotional needs than most other animals commonly kept as pets. Because of their longevity, (some parrots can live well over seventy years) the acquisition of a pet parrot is quite literally a lifelong commitment make that a life long commitment to a highly intelligent, energetic, social wild individual.

You will find that owning a parrot, (or as some people prefer, being owned by a parrot) is different on many levels. The differences are challenging and rewarding. When you bring a parrot into your home, you are bringing a bit of the wild into your domestic world.

Although parrots have been kept as pets for centuries, they have only recently been bred in captivity. They are not considered a domestic animal. In other words, the bird sitting quietly on her perch next to the couch is no different from her cousins living the wild life in the jungle.

For example, when a wild parrot returns to the roost with her flock-mates in the evening, she raises her raucous voice to the evening sky in shrill, joyful cavorting. This is part of her wild nature. It is both instinct and learned behavior and defines her as a social creature. Your pet bird at home is compelled to erupt in the same behavior. Equally natural to her are desires to tear apart objects with her beak, throw food around, and even "act out" when she senses rivalry for your attention.

Wow, sounds like a horrible pet! On the contrary, a well-balanced relationship with a companion bird is a rewarding, lifelong experience for you both.

It's one relationship that will last a lifetime! "Lifelong" is the key that attracts so many pet enthusiasts to birds. Unlike a dog or cat who's life span is usually well under twenty years, a medium to large size parrot has a natural life span of fifty to one hundred years. Even a tiny budgie or cockatiel can easily live fifteen to twenty years and a Conure, thirtyfive. When kept in a clean environment and fed a balanced, quality diet, you can expect your healthy pet parrot to be with you for a very long time.

Secondly, parrots can interact with you on a very high level. Intelligent and social by nature, your parrot has evolved over thousands of years to relate, in a communicative way, with its flock-mates who, in this case, are you and your family. Parrots are extremely demonstrative with their loved ones. Like primates, parrots spend a good part of their day engaged in social grooming. This mutual preening helps to increase and reinforce the emotional bonds the bird has with her mate and friends. In other words, you have a pet that, for once, can pet you back!

Most amazingly, a parrot has the ability to talk to you. Unlike any other animal in the world, a parrot is able to learn to mimic sounds with uncanny clarity and duplication. Beyond the ability to copy the sounds, behavioral studies support the theory that your pet parrot can even appropriately associate certain words and phrases with specific situations. For example, if you habitually turn off the light in your bird's living room while saying, "goodnight sweetheart," is it very likely that your bird will begin to signal you when she is ready to go to bed by saying, "goodnight sweetheart."

Weather or not your bird is a "talker," her unspoken language of nuzzling and clowning speaks volumes. When you learn to accept and love your bird as the expressive wild creature she is, you will even appreciate her temper outbursts and loud, silly moods.

No doubt, pet birds are a very big challenge for the Pet Parent. They are wild and intelligent. Their physical and emotional needs far exceed those of most commonly kept pets. Experts will tell you, it is like having a two year old child in the house for seventy years! Experts will also tell you that meeting the challenges of a pet parrot are very rewarding for both of you.
